FAQ 70: DNS Redirector vs. SaaS DNS offerings

DNS Redirector is software you install on your own servers. Meaning uptime is the responsibility between your IT department and your ISP.

OpenDNS, ScrubIT, and DNS Advantage are Software as a Service. Meaning uptime is the responsibility of your IT department, your ISP, thousands of Internet peers (routers, and the companies that manage them) and finally the service provider. With any SaaS provider, any redundancy or failover built in, the many hops of the Internet, and your own router or Internet connection are all points of failure.

DNS Redirector offers some unique features that others don't...
- temporarily bypass the block on a per-client basis
- logging of sites visited/blocked with per-client detail
- ability to fully customize or brand the blocked page
- ability to block everything and allow just a few sites
- ability to block advertisements and other sources of spyware/malware
- ability to show an emergency or network down message

While SaaS offerings are attractive and currently free, they add risk of downtime and depend on working Internet infrastructure. Our feeling is that most IT professionals can do a better job in-house, and still appreciate software installed and managed locally.
