FAQ 49: What makes DNS Redirector different/better?
Category: Initial setup | Updated: 3/30/2010 10:36:56 AM | Read: 1414 (Last: 9/5/2010 3:57:47 PM) Simply put, DNS Redirector only manipulates DNS and nothing else. Nothing needs to be modified, installed, or set on client computers that already use DHCP. Other products use a proxy service and/or proprietary MAC address rules; which can break web surfing depending on the user's browser, corporate VPN software, or personal firewall software.
The welcome, blocked, or time restriction pages imposed by DNS Redirector can be served by IIS, Apache, or any industry standard web server software you choose, allowing limitless customization of your pages and authentication process. Other products/SaaS offerings require use of their own web server or are branded with advertisements.
Our blocking keyword lists (free updates) contain data from 10 sources and include predictive blocking. For example, the keyword "antivir" prevents phishing scams/spyware that appear to offer legitimate virus scan software, the keyword "xxx" prevents access to pornography. These two keywords alone block thousands of websites and provide future protection against misleading domains that aren't even registered yet. Other methods require huge lists of full domain names in order to block.
DNS Redirector never requires any subscription or renewal fees for continued use. There is extremely expensive web filtering and HotSpot software out there, most of which is subscription based, and DNS Redirector is not trying to be that software.
Unlike other products that release weekly/monthly patches, DNS Redirector just plain works, and at an affordable price.
